Demolitions in Navi Mumabi

  • 350 houses demolished at Navi Mumbai

  • One person dies of heart attack

  • No notices served, nor any rehabilitation..

Laxman Matre (48) died of a massive heart attack after seeing his house going under a bulldozer during the demolition at Amrai Nagar, Sector 7, Nehrul, Navi Mumbai. About 350 houses were demolished on May 29, 2007. The people were living in the present place from 1994. No Notice was served and the officials came with Police by morning and started demolishing the basti.

People are still in the pavements even two days after demolition. Many of them are workers, domestic servants etc who work in the nearby construction sites and buildings.

It is said that the land which they lived on had been bought by a private builder from CIDCO and this was the immediate provocation for the demolition. According to the Maharashtra State policy, the slums before year 2000 are protected slums and in case of a demolition need to be rehabilitated.
