The project aims at enhancing capacity and knowledge of the community through a transdisciplinary approach to development, by the use of alternate non-polluting modes of production and sustainable business development model. The project also aims at reducing air pollution and hazardous smokes from pottery kiln firing. Scientific Research is a strong component of this project with emphasis on primary data gathering on epidemiology and environment/air quality. .
Overall objectives of Eco-health Project at Kumbharwada, Dharavi, Mumbai:
* To mitigate the health impact due to pollution in the long run and bring qualitative changes in the overall environmental condition of Kumbharwada.
* To develop technological solutions after detailed analysis of various options/alternatives related to kiln firing.
* To develop an integrated sustainable business model based on Techno-economic and business analysis.
* To create an empowered community with strong civil society which can fight for its basic rights
During the pilot phase of the project (2005-06) YUVA has successfully demonstrated gas based kiln, conducted socio-economic survey and air quality monitoring through people’s participation in development process and capacity development to bring about sustainable changes in community, which would be replicated in future.
The Project is a joint collaboration of YUVA (Youth for Unity and Voluntary Action) and IDRC (International Development and Research Centre); stakeholders in the project would comprise of representatives from YUVA, SNEHA (health consultants), Pristine (environment consultants), technical experts and people from the potters’ community of Kumbharwada, Dharavi. The diagram below represents the project in details:

The Eco-health Inception workshop is commencing on the 11th of June 2007. It would continue upto the 17th of the month, at YUVA Centre, Kharghar, Navi Mumbai.
